Cheryl Steffen lives and works exclusively on Anderson Island in the state of Washington. Anderson Island is the Southern-most Island in Puget Sound. Anderson Island has a close-knit community with a population of approximately 1,100 full-time residents and as many as 5,000 during the summer months. Anderson Island is accessed by ferry or private boat; just a short 20 minute ferry ride from the quaint town of Steilacoom.
The real estate market on Anderson Island is a fairly stable market. When prices were driven up across the state by the economic boom, prices on the island rose as well but not as drastically; so when the prices dropped, the drop wasn’t as drastic. There are many types of homeowners on the island; full-time residents, part-time residents, vacation homes and rentals which includes families of all sizes and ages from new families to retired folk. Something for everyone.
People often ask me why I live on Anderson Island. The first thing that comes to mind is that I never knew my neighbors before I moved to the island. It was as if I had blinders on. Now I know so many people; people I can call upon for just about anything. We have a strong sense of community; people from all walks of life which makes life very interesting here. Our island children attend a school which combines grades as there are fewer than 35 students in the entire school. Talk about one-on-one attention. Many parents volunteer to work with the children in the classrooms which I find absolutely amazing. The sense of community really flows into the classrooms on the island through their teachers and parents. Something a lot of children elsewhere don’t get to experience anymore.
All year long we have events going on Anderson Island such as the Annual Salmon Bake and Apple Squeeze at the Johnson Historical Farm, the Annual Fair a the Community Center, an annual fun-run in late summer and so much more.
Anderson Island’s rich history is full of wonderful stories about settlers and their life here on the island throughout the years. There are many parks on the island where one can hike around and enjoy the wildlife and peacefulness where you feel is if you were back in time.
